ONE YEAR LATER: still in love with every single unit we have purchased. Still running essentially silently, and been operating almost daily for a full year. We now have multiple versions, in all we have purchased 5 Vornado products, absolutely no regrets. I originally purchased the Vornado 660 room circulator as it is less costly; I love it, so much so that I sent one to my parents, who also love it...but I could not get this one out of my mind. When I went to order yet another, the 660 was out of stock, so I decided to bite the bullet, pay the extra, and ordered this beauty. OF NOTE: I mistakenly ordered the "medium" version; there is a Jr. that is smaller and a Sr. that is larger; this "medium" one is just called "Vintage", so a bit confusing. I have absolutely fallen in love with the Vintage line for its looks, versatility and metal construction; so much so that I immediately sent this medium sized air circulator to my parents for their bedroom! They were carting the 660 from the living room to the bedroom where they had to use a book to prop up the 660 so it would blow "down" from their dresser. One advantage of the Vintage VFAN line is that the fan housing fully rotates from pointing straight down to straight up; the 660 only goes from straight ahead to a steep upward angle and does not offer the flexibility that this one does. Please keep in mind, this is not a fan in the regular sense; it is a room air circulator - it creates a gentle breeze throughout the room, not unlike a ceiling fan, and is the absolute perfect solution if a quality ceiling fan is not an option. IF you want a fan that throws a heavy stream of air at you, then you want a fan, not an air circulator. If you want a fan that will cool the room, with a constant gentle breeze, you have found the right unit. SOUND: on high it is literally whisper quiet; we did not even have to adjust the TV volume and it sits between us and the TV. On low or med it is utterly silent. Plus the "noise" is constant and steady, with no ebbs and flows, ups or downs; squeaks, squeals or rattles. IF you are seeking a white noise machine, or want it in the bedroom to mask noise, this is NOT the fan for you. AIRFLOW: suitable for a 200 sq ft room or a 10x20 foot room, and is listed at a CFM (cubic feet per minute) of 295. That is the equivalent of taking a cube that measures 6.5 feet high, 6.5 feet long and 6.5 feet wide and pushing it through this fan, every single minute. SIZE: The unit stands about 14 inches high, 8 inches deep, and 12 inches wide. The grill area is about 8 inches. The Vintage VFAN is rated at a lower CFM (295 vs 584) than the 660; and is technically not quieter (57 vs 54 decibels on high). In actuality I find it MUCH quieter, so much so that when they are placed 20 feet apart, I can still hear the 660, when beside the Vintage SR (both on high) but when I move just five feet closer to the 660, I can no longer hear the Vintage. As to air flow, the 660 moves more air - but the next size up, the Vintage Sr. moves more than the 660 (613 vs 584). COLOR: The green is slightly deeper than is pictured, less of a mint cast, perhaps a nod to avocado, but definitely not nearly as "deep" or yellow a green as avocado. DIFFERENCES: The 660 is made of plastic (albeit very sturdy plastic), and does not fully rotate; it is also much more economical (although still very pricey), very quiet, has four (soft touch, 1cm buttons) speed settings on the rim and moves twice the air of the medium in the Vintage line, on high. It comes in multiple sizes: 460, 560 and 660. The Vintage VFAN Line is all metal construction (excluding the blades), fully rotates from face down on the floor to face up to the ceiling; it is quite pricey, super quiet (Sr. 53db, VFAN 57db, Jr. 44db vs 660 at 54 db) and has a mechanical twist knob on the rear that offers two (Jr.) or three (VFAN or Sr.) speeds. The Sr. is technically quieter than the 660, and has a higher CFM at 613; the Jr. has a top CFM of 185. Now as to looks, I am in love with the vintage look and do prefer it to the 660. In hindsight, I accidentally ordered the medium size, and not the Sr., my bad. So no, it will not push more air than the 660, even though it is around the same cost as the 660. I WILL attest that it is quieter than 660, although that IS contrary to the manufacturers specifications. Is it pricey, heck yes! Is it lovely to look at, quiet to operate and moves a whack of air, 100%, YES. If you are seeking a silent unit that will create a gentle breeze, cooling an entire room, that is incredibly efficient and beautiful, I highly recommend this unit (and the 660 for that matter), but you have to understand you are paying a high price for high quality.
