Great for the sternum.
I have used this twice since my purchase. Works well on the sternum and will cut the pelvis too. Better than lopping shears. Cleaner cut more precise. I use a Wyoming Knife to cut the hide down the sternum area , one careful incision to get under the sternum and start clipping. Easy and clean .

Made opening ribs easy
Worked on first deer of season and made it faster and easier. Also instead of using saw which left tiny bone fragments.. This was clean and smooth.. Hopefully mine doesnt break like some other reviewers.. Cause so far I really like it. Will update later Update:::: Have used 2 seasons and on several deer. So far It hasn't broken and remains to be a GOTO tool for field dressing the pelvic bone. Have used on Huge deer but all so far its done its job clean and smooth. I used this while field dressing in front of my father and a couple of friends. They were so impressed at how quickly I did the pelvic area that the immediately put it on their order list. Time will tell if it will hold up but as useful and as easy as it makes the process.. if it does break.. I will buy it again. VIKING if you are listening..... Please REINFORCE THE BLADE to make sure it will go through any bone.

The cutter doesn’t open wide enough
It does not open wide enough to cut certain areas and the handles are too short to get enough leverage to cut certain areas!

Needs some enhancements
Bought this based on other reviews. I needed it to open the rib cage on smaller deer to clean out the cavity. I wouldn't need for big bucks because the larger chest cavity has enough room to get my hands and knife inside without danger of cutting myself. I used it on an average size doe and it worked as advertised and made cleaning the cavity a breeze. However, it would not cut the socket bone on the hind legs and I had to use a bone saw to make the cut as I had before. Works ok on small bones, but forget the bigger ones It should have been designed with some type of locking device to keep the sharp blade closed tight when not in use. I wrapped a rubber band at the end of the handle to lock it in. But the company needs to design some type of blade lock for safety. A carrying case would be helpful too for packing in a backpack or utility box.

Weak tool
I used this tool on 3 deer. On 2 whitetail does it worked OK. Cut well but really lacks leverage as the handles are short. The width of the tool by the cutter makes it very difficult to get into tight areas and the jaws do not open far enough. Today it had the test on a big buck and failed as it bent in two places while attempting to cut though the pelvis. Good concept but definitely not up for the task.

Easy to use, cuts easily. Only thing that would make it easier to use would be to allow the blade to open wider, making it easier to get into the ribs to begin with. Otherwise, these split the ribs easily, and cleanly. Was even able to split the pelvis with no issue.

Nice quality and built well. Heavy though.
Nice and easy to use, but it's bigger than what I thought and heavy. It is a quality tool but not sure if I want to pack in the woods all day.

Good buy,Super customer satisfaction
This is a slick operating tool vice a reciprocating saw,but,the cutting blade bent so I can't rate it any higher.I am very content with Viking Solutions customer satisfaction. Without any provocation from me,they sent me a replacement for the Deer Splitter that I had a problem with. At 66 yrs.Old and disabled,this deer splitter is the best solution I have ever used. I have hunted for 50 years in many states including Vermont,N.Carolina,and Virginia and consider myself qualified to field dress and process any Deer. The Deer Splitter is the best thing I have used yet to Split a deer from one end to the other,without getting cut or messy.So much easier. This thing should have come around years ago !!! If you don't have one,or,have never tried one,then you need to get one and save yourself some time and aggravation { maybe some bandaids }.Many thanks for the product and for STANDING BEHIND IT.
