Alaskans fish a LOT. I've used ONE non-stainless steel version of this BERKLEY product since 1985, nicknamed The Alien after the sci-fi movie character. :-) I have used it extensively on my saltwater boat removing the hooks from deeply hooked halibut, lingcod, rockfish, Pacific cod, pollock, irish lords, sharks, skates(ugh) and 3 salmon species without getting a scratch on me and preventing a lot of injuries on fish I intended to release. These are NOT for the dry fly and nymph fly rodder as they are built large and very strong with a large jaw set for managing substantial sized hooks and putting a lot of gripping pressure on the hook for removal. Hooks smaller than #6 may be damaged due to the gripping power of this tool. Although I've used mine in and around saltwater for all these years a little preventative care of rinsing off the salt after use with a bit of freshwater from your drinking bottle has allowed this tool to work now for 27 years. In the freshwater category, I have used mine extensively ice fishing and open water fishing for Northern Pike and after regretting NOT bringing it along on a few fishing trips, I never leave home without it after that. Pike, as many anglers know, have tough jaws and sharp slicing teeth that can rival a shark for the damage they can do to hands and fingers. In my opinion this hook remover is ideal for those toothy critters in freshwater fisheries too. Not to mention using it on any fish you need to take the hook out of. Because of the gripping power on the hook, you can exert a LOT of force to get hooks out of bony or very tough tissue and cartilage. And this one has had plenty of workout removing hooks from large king salmon, sockeye and silver salmon all summer long. When this BERKLEY SS version turned up on Amazon for under $6 it was a no brainer to get this rust resistant tool for the saltwater boat and permanently transfer my "antique" hook remover to my freshwater fishing tackle box. In fact on my next Amazon order I'll add another one of these to my shopping list for a good friend who is a saltwater charter boat captain as a special "tip" on my next trip with him. P.S. I am reviewing the durability and performance of the BERKLEY brand product. There are other imitators you will see on the market, however I do not speak for those brands and their capabilities. BERKLEY has proven itself and for the price why gamble and take a chance with any other?

This worked well

I had a rod with a bad tip, so I ordered this product. The most difficult part of repairing a rod is removing the old broken tip and installing the new one. I was surprised to see that this kit still uses heat-activated "ferrule cement" they used at least 60 years ago. I remember my dad struggling to fix his casting rod when I was a kid. The "ferrule cement" was in a stick like this is,. but it was a brown color while this is white. I remember him using his zippo as a heat source and burning his fingers. I learned a few new words that day as well. Wanting to avoid that drama, I tried using the from burner on my electric stove. I set it on high and placed the bad tip over it. It took longer than the instructions said it would (30 second vs 10 seconds) but when grasped with a pair of pliers, the old tip came right off. I heated the stick of cement and coated the end of the rod with it. Holding it with the pliers, I heated the new tip up for several seconds and then slid it back on to the rod tip. I had a little trouble hitting the hole, but when I did, everything slid together. I aligned it, wiped off the residual cement and let it finish hardening. A quality repair that made the rod better than new. The only caveat I have is that i used the smallest tip (3/32") in the kit for a regular sized rod I use for bridge fishing here in the Keys. If i were fixing an ultra-light rod, I might look to see if I could get a smaller tip. All in all though, an extremely useful kit.

These are great!

These are awesome somebody said they don't bond the two sides properly, that person is using them wrong. You don't fill each side then smash the two sides together, you stick it right into the power bait jar and form it out of a single piece of dough so much better than doing it by hand, faster, and it even molds the dough to look like an egg cluster. Buy this.

Its "ok"

It does make a good uniform ball but it sucks at keeping it on the hook. I tried many ways of using it and I was hoping the compression would make a tight, tight, ball that would float better and also fuse both halves and keep it on the hook better but it doesnt. Where the two halves join there is a fine separation regardless of how much you fill both halves on the tool and how hard you press. With hard casts the bait will come flying off into two pieces. I dont really care for my hands being dirty as I roll a small amount in my palms and then make a tight ball to put on the hook and then dip it in the water for ~10 seconds, and then let it "dry" outside the water for about a minute and it solidifies very well onto the hook. I can cast a good 75 yards and be confident my bait is still on the hook, reel it back in and recast if needed as long as theres no seaweed to rip it off the hook. Doing that same exact method with the tool, I see my bait fly into two halves on hard casts before it hits the water lol. It was roughly 2 bucks and now there charging 6 bucks so take my advice when I say hard pass. Making a ball with your hands and putting it on the hook takes 20 seconds and with the tool I was spending a good minute packing both sides, pressing it into the ball, and cleaning up excess.

worked first time.

Cut down on mess. Worked even with single hook. Caught fish with bait moulded by it first go! Avoided lots of mess.
