Got a $!#@ packrat that's been eluding me!
I think pack rats in New Mexico must be extra crafty or something. I have one that I've been trying to capture for over a month, using various live and snap traps, along with a rat zapper. The dang thing kept somehow stealing the bait and eluding me. I decided to give this trap a try. The first night it caught a deer mouse, which was in the trap yesterday morning. Mr. Pack Rat decided that he wanted the peanut butter but couldn't get it, because the trap was closed around the deer mouse. He actually dragged the trap under my building that sits on skids and chewed the trap trying to reach the peanut butter. I was able to snag the trap out using a long piece of rebar. I dropped the dead deer mouse out into the "coyote dining area" and reset the trap. I thought there was a good chance that the pack rat would avoid it, but he was trapped (and dead) this morning! I saw other reviews that said this wasn't strong enough to trap a rat. I'm not sure how they compare size-wise to NM pack rats, but this fella was pretty large. It was very easy to squeeze the back open and drop the rat off in the "dining area" where I put the mouse yesterday (which was already snarfed up by some critter). The joys of country living! Bottom line, I'm very happy with this trap! Sorry for those that think these types of traps are cruel, but I've had far too much vehicle damage and chewed wires to be trying to spare pack rats or deer mice! I'm delighted that so far this trap, despite being chewed and dragged under a building, has caught one of each.

Easy to use with the right bait.
Bait is key? But this is an effective snap trap.

It did not catch any rats
The smart Norway rats just chewed through the bait cup and consume the PB or jam without triggering the snap. I will just discard all of the four units. It was past the return deadline date.

Birds Like Peanut Butter Too
Super easy to use. If setting traps outdoors be aware that birds like peanut butter also. May have to hide the trap away from the flying animals.

Easy to use but doesn’t catch rats.
Rats are too cautious for these to do their job. Was excited to try to solve our rat population, so set up these traps, which was very easy to do. I like the design in that regard. Baited them with peanut butter and the rats came out immediately. I watched for half an hour as several rats sniffed and touched the trap, but all were too wary to go in and trigger it. I know it is safer for other kinds of wildlife, but I will stick to the old style wooden traps instead of these safety ones.

Don’t count on it working.
This is not a humane trap. Jaws apparently aren’t strong enough to kill on contact. I had to watch the animal suffer before finally dying. I also found the bait (peanut butter) completely gone from all the traps but none were tripped.

Interesting Design
This rat trap has an interesting design and is well built. I'm not quite sure if it is any more effective than a standard old-school style rat/mouse trap though. It works and I am pleased with it, but I've had traditional traps that worked well too.

Works well for smart rats
Had a roof rat come out of a toilet and locked in an empty condo and of the three traps we tried, this one got him within 15 minutes after coming out for the night scavenger hunt. Died instantly, no mess, and head and front part of body caught in trap. I didn't reuse it since I only had one rat. Security cameras followed all the action. My roof rat was smart enough to maneuver though a sewer system vent pipe to toilet and could eat the peanut butter bait out of the first two paddle versions of traps we tried: TomCat easy set from Home Depot and old fashion paddle Victor wooden rat trap. Those were touched by human hands when put out so to be fair the rat may have been extra careful. It did eat the bait from both though on first encounter and returned often for more licks but never set off the traps. I only bought this trap because of late night desperation and Lowe's being the only choice for shopping. I found the hood trigger intriguing. For these we did everything right. 1) Wore gloves and mask to eliminate human scent 2) Baited with Slim Jim end stuffed as deep into bait cup as it would go 3) taped the trap to the floor and counter placed near the toaster where it was regularly visiting to find crumbs. This hooded trap delivered immediate satisfaction, as first encounter worked with a clean kill and no mess. While I bought mine at Lowe's I'd certainly buy these again from Amazon since they are so easy to set and actually worked. So remember wear gloves, tape down, and use Slim Jim tips that they have to pull out of the bait cup and can't help but pull up the hood to set off the trap. If you have a smart rat that gets what the paddle does in a trap, they may not have encountered this type of trap. It's worth a try. Glueing dried dog food piece to the bottom of the bait trap is supposed to work too. You can even add a peanut butter coating. I luckily didn't have to go to this next step because I had one roof rat that was willing to die for a Slim Jim. There is also a smaller mouse version without teeth for mice, so make sure if you have rats you use the rat trap. Size matters.
