General Tools S838 6 Piece 3/16-Inch to 1/2-Inch Drill Stop Assortment

I bought these to use with my drill press as well as my "Dowel-It" dowel jig and originally chose this particular General Tools drill stop set primarily because some of the older reviews stated that they are made in the USA, but sadly that is no longer the case as the package now says made in China on it. All things considered though, these are still pretty decent drill stops. There are no size markings stamped on the collars, but I don't know if that matters anyway, since you can just eyeball them with the appropriate drill bits. The small socket head set screws provided seem to secure them in place okay, but I find that they sometimes hold better and sit flatter when tightened down against the inner web of the drill bit instead of on the outer edges of the flutes as intended. Since the stock socket head screws on the three largest collars aren't really long enough to do this, I ordered some longer M4 X 8mm screws from McMaster-Carr. There was no actual storage case included with these stops, but they did come in a small clear plastic display tray that I use to keep the set together in the parts drawer on top of my workbench. Overall though, I think this set was a good value. They are simple to use and work as designed, so should be fine for my needs.

They do the job

I used the 3/8ths one to stop a hand drill when I was creating holes for a dowel joint. It didn't sit perfectly perpendicular on the drill bit, looked kind of wonky. However, it tightened nicely and stopped the drill bit at the appropriate depth. My guess is the smaller ones will sit on the bit a little bit better. I'd recommend these anyway. They are cheap and they do the job.

Good Product

This is a great product and offers you piece of mind when drill those dowel holes. I agree with the other review though; I wouldn't have minded paying a touch more for a case to keep them organized. The bore size seems to be correct. I've only used two of them so far. They slid on very well, demonstarting to me that they were manufactured to within a set of very high standards. They locked on very well and have never slid out of position while working with them.

Decent quality

Decent quality, but a bit on the flimsy side. I would say they will last for a long enough time to justify their price, so they are a good value. They may last longer with gentle use, but then this kind of tool should be used carefully and gently anyway.

Just OK - Not for high volume production work.

I have a hard time using these for drilling. It is hard to get enough torque on the set screw without stripping out either the collar or the hex head of the screw. For wood these are fine. I use them when boring blind holes. For steel where a little bit more pressure is required, these may not be suitable, especially for production work -- they may slip over time. That said, I'd double check the drill press every 10-12 holes anyway. Recommended for home hobbiest, work working - pine or soft hardwoods. Not the best for home machinists, or any critical or high volume production work. Use in hard hardwoods. Your mileage may vary, but these are OK for low production lumber products, and for their price perform betters than expected. Also make sure you have something to put them in. They don't come with any sort of real case. It isn't advertised that it does, but its something to think about. I use a smal nylonl zipper bag.

Great

Not only do these make an effective drill stop, but can also be used as a shaft collar. Say you had something with an axle and the metal cap that holds the wheel on fell off, here's your solution. Made from hardened steel and black oxide coated for rust resistance. These are cheaper than getting a shaft collar in many cases. Odd since that is all they actually are. They have a set screw in the side and come with the hex key to fit.

Serves the intended purpose for a low price

I needed some stop collars to replace the sticky, inaccurate tape I was using on my drill bits. This is a plain set of collars that fit the bill nicely. I gave them a light coat of oil, and put them to work. I should have paid this low price a long time ago!

pretty good for a weekend woodworker like me

pretty good for a weekend woodworker like me, the only thing that made this lose a star for me is that the screw can't hold much pressure. If you tighten it too much it simply comes loose, otherwise they are great stoppers for general use!

No se retienen en el sitio

Al apretar el tornillo lateral que se encuentra en el tope, no alcanza a hacer presión en la broca. considero que ese tonillo debe ser mas largo o incluso mas fuerte ya que no se logra que el aro o tope se sujete en la broca. Digamos que el tornillo se pierde en el canal de la broca. Intenté apretarlo en la parte que no tiene el canal de la broca para ver si así ejercía presión pero ni así logre que se ajustara adecuadamente. Además el aro no se mantiene perpendicular a la broca sino que queda ligeramente inclinado. Al momento de taladrar el aro o tope se aflojaba. Estuve batallando mucho y por eso decidí devolver el articulo. Para mi NO fue funcional, posiblemente no supe usarlo, pero lo intenté de muchas maneras y no pude mantenerlo en su sitio para que la broca no rebasara el limite .

no queda totalmente perpendicular

Al apretar el tope no queda perpendicular a la broca como pensé que quedaría. Se enchueca (inclina), y eso que ya intenté apretarlo de muchas maneras distintas. El tope para broca es usable, pero con la inclinación que queda al apretarlo hay que calcular bien en dónde ubicarlo correctamente a la medida deseada.

Bajo control de calidad

Nunca me había fallado la marca. En esta ocasión las piezas venían con rebabas que impedían su operación. Aunque es un producto económico creo qué hay que cuidar este aspecto.
