I ordered this lantern because I live in FL
I purchased this lantern (2) when I first moved to FL. I moved and I'm digging through boxes and found 1; I had 2. I know the other one is somewhere in the boxes. I purchase 2 more and they are the same quality as the ones I purchased 2 yrs ago. This is a wonderful lantern for when electricity goes out.

Lantern is not LED!
I recently order a rayovac LED Lantern from amazon. The lantern sent is a twin- tube fluorescent light very similar to a lantern that rayovac has made for many years. The newer model has three functions- high, low, and a night light. The older model which I have owned for many years which has been a very dependable product has only two functions. Only three stars because amazon misrepresented lantern as LED.

Perfect for power outages
We have only 4-5 power outages per year but when everything goes totally black at 9pm and you have to scar your legs stumbling into the edges of coffee tables while trying to remember where the flashlights are, it's not fun. So we got two different sets of devices. (1) a pair of bright power failure lights that plug in and just sit there until the power goes out, then they instantly and automatically come on bright enough to see our way around. Different styles are readily available from Amazon and other stores. (2) This Rayovac lamp with fluorescent tubes, powered by D batteries. It is plenty bright, some people say equal to 40 watt incandescent but seems more like 60-75 watts to us. Even set at half power, which doubles the battery life, it's bright enough to do anything except read a book comfortably. The 8 D batteries cost around $15 for a set of name brand, but they have a storage life of 7 years. We like this Rayovac so well we will order a second one so each of us can carry one from room to room. It comes with a sturdy and comfortable carrying handle, is a bit heavy with all those batteries but my wife and I are in our 80's and we can manage it. We figure it's a law of nature that if you are well prepared for a disaster, you will never get one; if that's true it was a cheap price to pay.

Great for power outages
The factory OEM fluorescent tubes that are in it have decent brightness to them they are a bit color rendering if you are sensitive to really daylight time lightbulbs they do make replacements firm that I have ordered and put them in to change the color temp on them to warm white with warm white bulbs you get more brighter light and hell of a lot more time on battery life

Faulty piece
Ordered this item based on the reviews online and it was delivered within 2 days due to Amazon Prime. The packaging was good. The product itself looks good and robust, and looks like a good lantern that has a good life. But the biggest fault is the bottom lid that is used to put the batteries in it is very poorly made. The item that I received took some force to open the bottom lid-this is where the problem started. I was trying to be gentle as I don't want to break the item (I'm know to break things easily :P), plus in case I have to return it, I want the product in the condition it came. Once the lid was open, after 10-15 mins of unscrewing the lid, I put in the 8-D batteries as required and tried to close the lid (tighten the screw). Here is where the major issue started. It was difficult to keep the lid in place and try to tighten the screw because of the metal plates that keep the batteries in place. I kept on rotating the screw as per the directions but that didn't go anywhere. At some point it felt like it is tight (and I didn't want to break it, so I stopped), but the lid was not entirely in place. It was just enough to hold the batteries together. I turned on the light by using the switch on top. The switch is not that great-I felt the switch is loose, as I had to adjust a little bit for the light to turn on. But all the lights did turn on. So in that aspect of functionality, this product works. But remember, the lid is not entirely in place. This is a problem when you carry the lantern in your hand. The weight of the 8-D batteries will push the lid out and they will just fall out. So I removed the lid - again with a lot of effort - to check what is wrong with the screw. I placed my fingers (thumb & index finger) on the screw and twisted the screw-handle to see if the threads were carved properly, only to find out that the threads are not helical - they are just a collection of close ended rings. The screw is faulty. I was really upset as I spent quite some time trying to research a lantern for my upcoming camping trip. With this product being faulty, I was left high and dry as I didn't have enough time to get a replacement. So I ended buying something sub-par from a local store which in some ways ruined my mood as the light was not as powerful. I am still giving this product 2 as my objective evaluation. It does work - gives a good light when fed the batteries. But it's most important functionality to keep the batteries in place is faulty. For me this issue just brings the entire product down. What's the point of the lid if it can't keep itself (hence batteries) in place. Since the lid is at the bottom, imagine walking with this lantern in your hand and suddenly the lid pop-out. Inefficient design in my opinion. I'm not sure if anyone else had the same issue; hopefully it's just me. From the reviews left by others it seems that it worked for them. But I will not order a replacement as I don't need it now, plus I'm already stuck with a sub-par lantern which can still use for emergency purposes. Good luck!

Es grande
Linterna grande, pesada pues ocupa 8 pilas D, los modos de luz nunca van alumbrar lo suficiente, el inconveniente mas importante que veo es el repuesto de los focos fluorescentes. Aun asi, la linterna es demasiado bonita, estética, y si no buscas exceso de luz bien puede servirte. La recomiendo para necesidades de luz bajas. Y el precio se me hizo el correcto.

It does take 8 D batteries but they last for hours.
It is a great bright lantern when the power goes out for reading and cooking, or just as a flash light to get around.
