It works if you follow the care for your humidifier and not expect this to take up any slack!
I had so much trouble with my humidifier having pink slime and black mold, and I really had trouble cleaning the tunnel output area which is small and narrow with nooks and crannies. I thought I did as a good job as possible every time I had to refill it, but I hoped this little thing in the tank could help solve my problems. It did not. It seemed to make things worse. So I have this a bad review. But I take it back. I read the manual for my humidifier and found I had only been using cleaning vinegar which is good for descaling, but not for sterilizing it and proper cleaning. And so I followed the directions exactly to do both one at a time, and it clean d my humidifier perfectly and it is clean as can be. I have only been doing a partial job, and the part with bleach absolutely got it clean even in the nooks and crannies and areas I didn't think it would reach. And now that it is perfectly clean, I began trying distilled water, but idk, my plants didn't like it. But I added this thing back in the tank, and the humidifier has stayed clean, even past the time I'm due for a new weekly cleaning and descaling! So it just pays to read all the directions and instructions for everything. If you don't, then your humidifier will look disgusting. That means you're not reading the booklet that came with it! And that would make this pointless to use. But now I believe it works super well, so I'm changing my entire review and am happy.

They really work!!
Don't go longer than 2mos if you use your humidifier everyday like I do. Remember to change it out when it's time. They actually work to keep your water and unit clean n fresh. When my humidifier runs out and I'm done using it, I dump out the water, so there's none of that build up in the humidifier, where I guess the water leaves a red film in the unit. I dump all the water out and leave it to dry out until I'm ready for it again. This helps with the longevity of this little purifier to keep the water and unit clean for my next use. Checking the type of water you're using in the unit can also help with your cleaning options between hard or soft water... Unless you're using bottled water... This is a good purchase. It works!

Easy to Use
I really like the ease of pop ping one of these in my humidifier that I use all winter. It seems to work well because I really don't smell any odd odors. I pair this with a demineralization capsule. It's pricey using this cleaning ball, but it's worth it not having to clean our the humidifier so often. But I do think these should be a lower price.

An inexpensive way to keep the water and the filter of your humidifier cleaner longer
I love this product. The problem with most humidifiers is the high bacterial growth in the water. You can tell by the musty smell in the air from the dirty and contaminated water in the tray and in the tank. Clean steam has no odor. I am doing this review based on the specific humidifier machine I own, the Honeywell Model HCM 630. I live in NYC in an overheated apartment during the cold months. My husbands and I got a lot of cold, dry coughs, dry skin and nose bleeds from the heated dry air that was why I bought this machine two years ago to alleviate our suffering. There are three hidden maintenance steps that every humidifier owner must perform that the manufacturer of the humidifier usually did not mention in their instruction booklet in order to keep the humidifier hygienic. The first, one must keep the tank and the water scrupulously clean by scrubbing the inside of the tank, the inside of the lid while changing the water daily. The second, once a month, after cleaning the tank, you drop one of these Protec cartridges in the tank and let it do its work as it helps slow down growth and migration of mold, fungus, algae, and bacteria in the water and on the filter. The third and just as necessary as the other two, replace the big round filter monthly or as often as every two weeks especially if you keep the humidifier running 24/7. If you do all three steps regularly, you'll enjoy the clean steam that helps protect your mucus membranes from drying out (much healthier for all of us) during the winter months and one added bonus, not being zapped by static shocks when touching another person or a metallic object when the humidifier is operating.

Easy to use
This winter, we have been running our heater around the clock resulting in rey skin and nostrils. I have had my humidifier also running this entire time as well. I am extremely sensitive to irritants like mold or mildew so I wanted to make sure my humidifier wasn't harboring any allergens. I clean it regularly but aw this and figured this could help me between cleanings. It was super easy to use and I just threw it in the tank of my humidifier and filled as I would normally. Its tiny and has worked well so far. I will say sometimes it gets sucked over to the hole where the water slowly drips out but it hasn't caused any problems. I just shake it over to the other side and we are back in business.
