Larger-sized pestle and mortar for a well-stocked kitchen that does a lot of crushing

This pestle and mortar is an attractive and contemporary-looking piece that looks great out on the worktop of any smart and tidy kitchen. It is quite a large unit so you’d probably only want this out if you’re going to use it a lot. The inclusion of a bamboo lid with a groove for the pestle to sit in is a thoughtful design inclusion that not only provides a place for the pestle, it also keeps dust out of the mortar. It is neatly packaged without too much wastage, and the whole thing is up to the standard that I have come to expect from the Joseph Joseph brand. For a price of c. £45 (at time of review) it is undoubtedly a fair chunk of money for sure, but it is also a hardy and enduring functional granite object that will last many lifetimes. You’ll need to plan for its journey of inheritance because it will outlive you.

Beautiful

This is a stunning pestle and mortar from Joseph Joseph. Stylish but practical, it looks great left out on the kitchen counter. The inside is nice and rough and grinds down dry goods so quickly and well. There is also a lovely bamboo lid that covers anything you choose to store in there. The lid also has a slot to perfectly hold the pestle so you don’t have to stand it in the mortar. It also weighs a tonne so it won’t easily move around while you’re grinding stuff up. A bit expensive but is definitely a luxury feeling item.

Sleek and sturdy

I've wanted a mortar and pestle for a while and the stone paired with wood look caught my eye. This is a generous size and hold a decent amount of ingredients. The lid is easy to fit on and off and the pestle fits into the lid easily. This looks very sleek in my kitchen and I find it easy to use. It is heavier than I expected by quite a lot! Since I use it sat on the kitchen side though that isn't really an issue. I'd recommend this.

Beautifully made

This pestle and mortar is stunning, the weight to it is great and really allows you to grind herbs etc so fine. The colour is exquisite a lovely stoney dark and light mix of greys with a light wooden lid. I love it comes with a lid with a groove to hold the pestle with.

Pestle & Mortar – Beautiful Quality & Will Last

This Joseph Joseph pestle and mortar came well packaged in a cardboard box and would be a lovely gift to receive. Inside the box is the pestle (in its own cardboard box), mortar and bamboo lid (wrapped in plastic). The set when assembled measure 15.5cm in diameter (it was much larger than I had expected) and 13cm in height and weighs approximately 3kg in total. The pestle and mortar are machine carved from hard wearing natural granite so they are very heavyweight and means each pestle and mortar are unique to the natural stone it is cut from. The mortar (bowl element) has a fitted bamboo lid which keeps the mortar clean and dust free when in storage and due to the cut-out indentation, the pestle sits comfortably into the bamboo lid without rolling around and potentially getting lost. It looks very nice on display on my kitchen countertop and I really like the design. The description does suggest that the bamboo lid could be used as a small chopping board, but in all honesty, I think it’s too nice to leave stains / cut marks on even though it’s on the inner surface. However, it is good to put the ingredients onto before grinding / crushing. To maintain the bamboo lid you should use food safe mineral oil to stop it drying out and when cleaning the lid do not soak it in water as it could go mouldy otherwise. Before using I rinsed the lid and hand washed the pestle and mortar, letting all three components thoroughly dry air and I also did this immediately after use to minimise any staining. So far, I have used it to make pesto and it worked very well but I also plan to use it for making marinades and spice rubs. Currently priced at £45 at the time of reviewing I do regard the pestle and mortar as a luxury investment piece, as there are cheaper options on the market but I do think that it will last a life time and Joseph Joseph is an excellent quality brand so I would definitely recommend it if it is within your budget.
