My boyfriend has a cat so I had to come up with the best way to do the weekly litter change. I like the thought of having a bag that the litter goes into that you can just pull the bag with the old litter out of the cat box. So I bought this. I don't ever want to shovel, scrape, wash, or pour old litter out of a cat box again. Plus I like the feature of the litter not going all over the floor. The first week I tried the cat scratched through the bag and I ended up having to clean the cat box. The second week I tried putting parchment paper in between the bag and the litter and the cat scratched through that. My boyfriend had a bunch of framing mat board for free from someone so I cut that and made a template. I am sure that's going to work out perfectly but I think cardboard would work just as well too. It comes with three bags that are kind of thin. I used those thick black garbage bags (leaf bags?) that I cut in half and duct tape the end of one together for next time. So I get two out of one bag. Not sure if they have to be thick bags I just have them on hand. The downside is I would have to cut the cardboard or mat board and make about 50 a year. I plan on having a template and doing quite a few at a time so I just have them on hand to use. Also I would have to get one box of garbage bags and cut and tape those too. The upside is changing the cat litter takes just a few minutes. I'm so much happier! It's not something I dread anymore. It's so easy. Plus I don't see anything going into the air that I would want to breathe in. One more note when I feed Melanie just chicken that I cook in a slow cooker she poops less and it doesn't stink. ???? Update to previous post - Very happy with it still! One picture is showing the order in which I put it all together. Make sure you keep pulling the bag up in the process. Also put the gray ring in before you put the cat litter in otherwise litter will go under the grey ring. If you're moving it after it's assembled grab it from the bottom. Bag can be tucked under white ring to hide it. Also I have yet to use the scooper. The board you would need is going to be 15 by 15. If you're in a pinch you could get the foam board that kids use for school projects at Walmart for under a dollar which would be two of them. Poster board is too short. The only thing I would change - the gray ring has a ridge on the inside. I will include a picture. The kitty litter does get on that ridge so I do have to put that in the laundry sink I just quick clean that with a paper towel and water. Not sure if they wanted you pour litter to that ridge. It's definitely not needed. We will be moving into an RV soon and the cat box fits perfectly in front of the passenger seat when we will be parked. I still love this! So much easier! Beats all the high-tech clever solutions to cat-box mess for me

After experimenting with many of the clever, automated catbox solutions (which often jam, and are a pain to clean and maintain), this simple design is my go-forward plan for as long as I own cats. It's just easier to use, and to clean. Yes, you have to open the lid (well, you don't have to, but it makes scooping easier), and scoop out the litter yourself, but its simple design means it just works. The lid comes with some space for your cat to walk after using the box, hopefully allowing most (admittedly, not all) of the litter to get off your cat's paws before being spread around the house. This and a good quality metal scoop (I don't really recommend the smaller plastic scoop that comes with this, though it does have a convenient hang-on-the-side-of-the-box design), and some quality clumping litter makes catbox maintenance much easier for me. The clever battery-powered or plug-in solutions never quite worked if you put in too much litter and get gross if you put in too little. This one, you pour in a bunch, and scoop it out regularly, and when it does need major cleaning, it's merely bucket-shaped and easy to give a good bath in the yard (after pouring out the litter of course) and drying in the sun. Simple design is better.

Overall I like this litter pan

This litter pan leads to almost no litter on the floor. Cats wipe their feet on the lid and excess litter stays there. I did notice a slightly increased odor due to no door like before. It was a little awkward to lift for changing out the litter, especially if there is too much litter in the pan. The lid was hard to put on at first but okay after I got the hang of it. I had to put treats leading to the pan and show the cats where their litter is now located but that only took one time and they started using it. Overall I prefer this pan to the front entry one from before.

Just what we needed, especially if you have small dogs.

First of all, if you have small dogs who partake in litter box treats, this is what you NEED. The dog can on longer access the litter box. I know that is nasty, but it's an undeniable part of owning some small dogs with cats in the home. It took about 4 days for the cats to adjust from using a standard covered litter box to this one. There is for sure less litter on the floor, no need to use a litter bag anymore which is a plus. The box is very easy to scoop. Putting the lid in place is a little tight, but I think that's just because it's new, and will get easier over time. Box is good quality. I am considering getting a second one for a different room in the house.

It's reduced the litter on my carpet by half at least.

Your mileage may vary depending on your cat's behavior. I have two cats. One climbs out of the box as intended, and the litter in her paws gets trapped in the lid. My other cat simply jumps out the box and onto the floor, bringing litter with him. So there's a 50% reduction in litter I have to vacuum up. I'm a little bit concerned that the plastic this is made of is already showing scratches on the bottom. It's not a problem yet, but I worry in the future that scratched up plastic will trap bacteria and odor.

Love it!

For those saying it doesn't lock well, the base can get a little bent to more of an oval shape and beckmes too narrow during shipping. Gently put pressure on the base in tbe other direction to bend it a bit more to a circular shape. Once you do that, the lid should lock into place just fine. My cat was terrified of it for a few days even with the lid off. But I kept it next to his original litter box with clean litter in it and let his original one get a little more dirty than usual. Eventually he started using this one. After a few more days I put the lid on and got rid of this old box. The trick is to put the littler box against a wall / walls so the cat has to walk over the top part to catch the litter from his paws. It helps a lot. There's not as much litter in the house, but he still does manage to track some litter out of the box.

Not just for spring chicken or kittens

Our 14 year old, large breed (maine coon & calico) cat loved it. I was worried she wouldn't fit very well, or want to jump up on the box. Nope. And this is her first top down box, give it a try. Keeps most of litter off the floor and the mat does the rest. Scoop is too small, but not a deal breaker.

1. DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A LITTER BOX — unless you're right next to it! more like a stylish bin of some sort, instead of what might otherwise be beat-up, stained, dirty & dusty pee/poo box in it's place. the model i got (white, with beige top) matches the mid-century rip-off credenza that it's next to. 2. CAT USES IT! she's about nine years old, but despite her "mature" status, this is easy for her to get into and out of. roomy enough for her to do her business. 3. IT WORKS! the grooved cover catches most of the litter that i would otherwise be sweeping up off the floor, and the little mat i have at the base catches the rest. only seeing the odd grain here and there. 4. EASY TO CLEAN. the lid comes off easy, and i just turn it sideways, and tap it a couple of times to clear the litter grains back into the box. interestingly: i am not scraping clumps off the inner walls either. YMMV depending on your cat's habits (and litter), but this is SO much cleaner that the disgusting box she was using before. 5. other notes: a) there are two model sizes from IRIS USA. i have the larger version with the scoop hook on the inside. definitely recommend getting the larger size, so your cat has more room. b) NO SMELLS with Arm & Hammer Clump & Seal, FWIW. but i usually have no idea my cat has eliminated in it until i check. so for those who still smell cat poo -- could be diet, could be litter. c) also interesting: she was ridiculously loud with her old box, i would be awoken at night from the scratching sounds — she is entirely silent with this. it's not soundproof of course, but i have no idea she's even in it.

Kitty loves it, but...

TWO days after return window closes, the lid starts caving in. Whaaaaat? I honestly was so excited about this box and did a ton of research before getting it. My cat is about 9.5lbs, and has no trouble in and out. Its a little awkward to clean but overall Ive been very happy with it and I ditched her old box. And now the lid doesnt want to properly clip into the box and Im not sure how to rectify this. I can permanently seal it but that will make it very difficult to clean. I cant even find a way to contact the seller. Im bugged. Id expect this from a $20 purchase but $50 felt like more of an investment I guess...especially since I bought one she could grow into since she was less than a year old when I ordered it. I love the concept but Im not impressed. I guess Im left with an overpriced waste bin:(

No more puddles

My cat has started to wee standing up so was coming over the top of her current tray which was not a pleasant thing cleaning a puddle up every day. This box is the perfect height as she can do what she wants and I don't have the horrible mess or smells anymore. It's OK to scoop out littler and just wipes clean ready to refill with fresh. Glad I chose this as there is also less litter spread outside of the box.

Good size and stops mess.

This product works brilliantly. Took cat a couple of try’s to get used to it but it’s big enough for a full grown cat to use. Emptying is a little tricky as it’s large size makes it harder to hold but other than that it’s perfect. Comes with litter tool with hook so it can be placed on side of tray. Now my dogs can’t tip the tray over or attempt to eat it’s contents and the cat doesn’t rip up the carpet by digging around the edges of the tray or bring half the litter out onto the floor. Definitely a tidier type of tray!
