Smaller than expected ... but GREAT!

I posted a few pictures of this item to show it's size it is just under 5 inches tall and 6 inches wide. Despite the small size this item is awesome. Made of good quality wood. Also, unlike Melissa and Doug products this item had no chemical smell to it. I also like that it is made in Switzerland instead of China. I did notice a run in the paint on the yellow block but it does not bother me at all since this product is so well made and painted. The paint is so thick (particularly on the orange moon) that it almost feels like plastic it is so smooth. I spent allot of time researching shape sorters and this one seemed to fit the bill the best. I wanted a wooden one, which obviously this one is (we did not want the Melissa and Doug wooden shape sorter due to a past recall on it due to barium levels in the paint), Wanted one that had more than three shapes and one of the main things I was looking for was one that would be easy for our daughter to get the blocks back out of. This item falls a bit short of the mark on that one. We have not given it to her yet but, I can tell from playing with the item myself that the string is going to be a pain in the butt. I am actually considering cutting the top string so that she can just reach in and grab the blocks back out. I read the review that mentioned this issue...so I was expecting it. I am glad that we chose this one. Not only does it teach shapes, but also colors and the beads are nice for making music with. Well worth the price!

our favorite toy

I like how this toy captured my son's attention immediately. Well, to be fair he was SUPER excited before we even took it out of the box. I let him bat the box around for a few days looks at the colorful images, feeling its weight and hearing the little beads rattling inside the pieces inside the box. He was only seven months old when we purchased it but was already really excited about the shapes and colors. The toy doesn't seem to be getting old close to a month later he is still amused by it. He likes to drum on the top with his hands, push it across the floor, tumble it on it's side like a wheel, pick it up and clang it down on the floor (wood/tile) and play endlessly with (including teething on) the six shapes. It is definitely durable there is not one ding or tooth mark to spite his rough play. I have other wooden painted toys that chipped/peeled within just a few minutes of his rough play and am impressed by this toy. Eventually he'll learn the names of the shapes and colors and be able to sort them himself but for now it is fun for us to see his eyes light up when we dump the shapes out onto the floor. This is by far the best toy we've purchased or been given. It keeps him engaged without frustrating him, even though it is geared for older babies, and as he matures the toy will continue to be a useful learning tool. This mama is pleased!

Great quality.

First, let me say that Hape is quickly becoming my favorite brand for quality wood toys. I'm never disappointed by them. This is no exception-- it's sturdy, colorful, and beautifully finished. The colors are gorgeous and the paint shows no signs of chipping despite some very enthusiastic usage by a 14-month-old boy. We have had no difficulty with fitting all the shapes into the sorter-- when you use the sorter as it was designed to be used (colored pieces up-- the sides are flat for a reason!) there is a natural "mixing" effect, and the other shapes already in the sorter are moved out of the way. If you're trying to insert the pieces from the side, though, you are probably going to have a problem! I agree with some of the other reviews-- it is a little difficult to get shapes out. I find that holding the elastic to one side and shaking the shapes out of the bottom is the easiest way, though if you're comfortable with it I'd recommend cutting the string out of one side for easier removal. Aside from the "removal" issue, we really love this toy. I would definitely purchase this again.

Buy 4 month old and beyond

This is a perfect toy to get a 4 month old baby to toddler. Shapes can be used like a rattle when on the younger side. Very sturdy and secure rattles. I love the bungee style rope to keep the shapes inside while not being used. Very easy to remove by pulling bungee to the side and shaking holder.

One of my 9-month old's favorite toys and so versatile!

I bought this about a month ago for my 9-month old and it instantly became one of his favorites. The shape sorting aspect of it is a little advanced for him, but he absolutely LOVED the little balls in each shape that he could shake like a rattle and then bang two of them together. Just in the past two days, he's been trying to put the shapes into the holes (of course, the wrong ones, but he gets the idea). When I put one in for him, he spends a good deal of time trying to get it out. I can just feel his little brain chugging away learning new things with this toy. The colors are beautiful and vibrant, love the smooth wood and how non-toxic everything is. It's not just an ugly plastic kids toy, then really is something more sophisticated and aesthetically pleasing about this toy. I really feel no need for any other type of shape sorter in the future. I think the little balls in each shape is was really sells this shape sorter - my son is at the age where he loves shaking things and loves to hear sounds when he shakes things, so this is perfect. This toy will be around for a LONG time. Very happy with this little product.

Beautiful shape sorter, kids love it!

This really is a beautifully done toy. The kids like that each shape makes sounds from the beads inside and enjoy matching the shapes and then emptying them out. All the edges are smooth and it is very well made. I don't have to worry about edges peeling, or the kids picking away a paper/cheap top liek i've experienced with Melissa and Doug products. The strings on side are very stretchy so they hold the shapes inside until you are ready to take them out again.

Excellent quality, stimulating toy for babies

My 1 year old loves this toy! She has just started to sort the shapes, she couldn't to start with and would just match the shapes by colour to the side of the unit to which they relate. All of the shapes have little balls in so they are like little rattles so she loves to shake these and bop about as well as bash them together. No issues with paint running, cracking or wood splitting. Perfect condition over 2 months of play so far. It is easy to remove the shapes, move the elastic cord and the shapes drop out. I love the shape of the unit too which is really different to most toys. It has the shape outlines drawn on the top of the sorting unit which is another learning opportunity for baby to match the shape to its outline. Highly recommend. Please like my review if it was helpful :)

Great toy

Lovely bright colours and well made.

Lovely wooden shape sorter and the small beads inside the shapes gives added interest to little ones who may not be able to sort correctly yet but who are at the exploring stage. Well made toy with bright colours. Some more challenging shapes for when they've figured out the simpler ones too. The only let down for me was the elastic which stretches across the opening. Whilst this is very effective at keeping the shapes secure in the unit, getting them out is another matter as you have to pull the elastic to one side whilst trying to manoeuvre your hand into the small space. It does look very tidy though and perhaps the addition of a traditional 'door ' style opening would take away from the aesthetic of the product but for me functionality is more important for a toy like this. Don't let this put you off too much though as it really is one of the nicer shape sorters I've had and seen.

Durable fun for baby to toddler stage

We have had this toy for 5 years now, very durable. All 3 of my kids loved it. Our baby is 11 months old and loves shaking the shapes. Only down side is if your child likes to bite or chew on toys, paint does come off a bit we noticed.
