You can repair that 30 year old American Standard kitchen faucet at 10% of what a new unit would cost. You do not need the 3 seals listed below the cartridge, the necessary seals are pressed into the Danco unit. You do need the o-ring kit with the plastic ring however. 1) Remove the handle with a small Allen wrench, (do not completely remove the screw, see below), then remove the rectangular black plastic covering on the old cartridge's control stem; set them aside. Have a container ( I used an aluminum turkey basting tray) ready with CLR, also rags and a stiff wire brush and old toothbrush. 2) Use the rubber handle of a small hammer to loosen, then remove the chrome housing cover that lies beneath the control handle. Place all chrome parts in the CLR bath as you proceede. 3) Remove the three pan head screws that retain the cartridge, remove the unit and set the screws aside. Remove the plastic collar that houses the cartridge, and set it aside. 4) Using a rag soaked in CLR and a wire brush, clean the exposed o-rings mating surface, also clean the plastic collar. 5) Using a small flat blade screwdriver, insert it into the small gap between the bottom of the spout and the faucet's base. Pry/pull up and remove the spout, place it in the CLR bath. 6) Using a dental pick or jewler's screwdriver, remove the (2) rubber o-rings and bottom plastic ring. Dispose of these. 7) Using a CLR soaked rag and old toothrush, clean the grooves where the o-rings sit and the entire base. While this dries, clean all the parts in the CLR bath, as they will likely be coated with mineral deposits. Ensure the grooves cut in the spout base where the o-rings ride are clean, then allow all the parts to dry. 8) Install the plastic ring and 2 new o-rings, coat them with silicone grease. ***Reassembly order MUST be the exact reverse of disassembly.*** (If you were to install the cartridge now, the spout will not fit.) Fill the o-ring grooves inside the spout with silicone grease, and firmly seat it over the new o-rings. 9) Place the plastic collar over the Danco cartridge, then install the unit, after making certain the mating surfaces for the 3 seals is clean and dry. Tighten the 3 screws in oppostion until the unit is firmly seated. 10) Replace the chrome housing by just pressing it down until it seats against the spout. 11) Install the black plastic rectangular cover over the Danco's control lever. 12) Install the control handle, you can then tighten it as you left the Allen screw in the threads a few turns. This is easier than trying to find the threads after completely removing the screw. Either way works, this is simply quicker. Attached is a photo of the dinosaur I revived, the base is so corroded it has a small hole in it. I'd rather spend < $20 than >$200.
